India has secured a lead in the 7-match ODI series with a win on a slow and low pitch at Kotla. One news channel is debating with Sourav Ganguly on whether the Australians have begun their dirty tricks once again. This comes after Moises Henriques came in Dhoni’s way while the latter was taking a run. The video footage clearly shows Henriques running across the pitch backwards, away from the stumps, away from the ball. And all the while he was not looking at Dhoni running from the striker’s end.

Dhoni and Yuvraj see India through
It has become a fashion to accuse the Australians of violating the spirit of the game again and again. We must realise that they have been going through a bad patch in the last one year. Ricky Ponting, normally known to instigate mind games with the opposition before a tournament, has appeared subdued ever since the Ashes. He has realised what it is like to have your backs to the wall. But still the dreaded ‘C’ word is being used against him now and then. Of course, Brett Lee started the mind games by saying that Australia would win 7-0 but look what has happened to him. Why not derive happiness from that rather than from caliing Ponting with that ‘C’ word? Mitchell Johnson sledged Sehwag and also had the last laugh against him in the Nagpur ODI but we would rather focus on the end result of the match than indulge in mindless debates and discussions about whether the Aussies are playing dirty tricks again.
Coming to today’s match, Michael Hussey once again showed his class in an unbeaten 81 which turned out to be the only saving grace for Australia. Probably Shaun Marsh should have come in in place of Adam Voges but things are always easier in hindsight.
The Australian domestic competition, the Ford Ranger OD cup and the Sheffield Shield Test competiition are underway in Australia. Victoria gained a 160-run lead over South Australia in a match where Brad Hodge and Chris Rogers slammed centuries against a helpless South Australian attack that lost its captain Graham Manou to international duty and its premier batsman, Callum Ferguson, to injury. In the simultaneously going Ford Ranger Cup, Queensland have won three out of three matches so far with wins against Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia. Meanwhile New South Wales open their domestic campaign with an FR Cup match tomorrow against Western Australia. What is so special about this match is that Phil Jaques will be making a comeback after a long layoff from injury. He is expected to open the innings with Phil Hughes with captain Simon Katich demoting himself to the middle order and David Warner at No.3. Also making a comeback in this match would be Brad Haddin who missed Australian duties because of injury starting from the OD series against England. The FR Cup matches are telecast Live on Star Cricket. One thing I noticed is that the FR Cup and the Shield matches are played to empty stadiums. Such players had got a chance to play in front of huge crowds in the Champions League T20 and therefore from the players’ point of view the CL T20 is definitely a success.
