The opening match of the 2005 Royal Rumble event featured Edge against Shawn Michaels in a singles match. Edge, who was wild-card star at that time, was catapulted into main-event status courtesy of his feud with Shawn Michaels during the latter half of 2004. Edge got the victory over Shawn Michaels in the match in typical heel fashion to complete his transition into a top guy.
