2012. A year that many football fans around the world wish to forget and hope it quickly flies by. Tragedy has engulfed and stunned the sport, capturing the emotions and hearts of many fans around the world. Muamba, Petrov, Venkatesh, Daei, Francis and Morais – current or former footballers who have all fell victim of this cursed year, a year of utmost tragedy and remorse for the sport we all love and hold dearly.
We, football fans, all hoped and prayed that the tragedies that have shocked us all will come to a close but, unfortunately, that wish and hope quickly faded and diminished as another football tragedy hit the football family with the death of a young, 25 year old Italian by the name of Piermario Morosini, who tragically collapsed today on the pitch in a match with his side, Livorno.
As news filtered out over his passing, the football family fell in shock and expressed their sorrow and grief though Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media in tribute and respect for someone they probably never heard of, but felt the impact and were hurt by this latest family tragedy.
Morosini was just 25, yes, 25. He had his whole life ahead of him, a former Italian U-21 international who first represented his country 10 years ago at just 15, young, fit and healthy. This just bewilders me and sends shivers down my spine, and a reminder that life can’t be taken for granted and how precious it is.
Morosini, a man that lost his father, mother and brother, has the chance to meet up and see them once more.
Good night and rest in peace brother.
