Early Predictions for WWE Extreme Rules

We are just about two weeks away from the Extreme Rules PPV, an event that generally sees every match featuring some kind of added stipulation, such as a cage match or street fight. Thus far, only three matches have officially been announced. Another four or five are likely to be added before the show, with possibly a surprise, unannounced match taking place. Although the card is not finalized, I thought I’d take a few minutes to look at what matches are official, and my thoughts on the likely outcomes of those matches. Once other matches have been made, I will add further predictions. For now, let’s look at the three we have thus far:

Chicago Street Fight for the WWE Championship: Champion CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho It will be hard for these two to top their awesome match at Wrestlemania 28, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s these two, who are truly two of the best in the world. Being straight edge myself, I’m not real big on the “CM Punk is a drunk” aspect of the feud, but it is what it is, and it shouldn’t detract from what could be a “Match of the Year” candidate. Although this match could go either way, I’m expecting Punk to retain the title. Jericho is rumored to be taking a bit of time off soon to tour with his band Fozzy, and if that’s the case, it wouldn’t make sense to put the belt on him right now. On top of that, rumor is that Brock Lesnar will win the title at some point prior to Wrestlemania 29 to make his match with The Rock for the title, so there’s a good chance Punk may be putting him over down the road. As a result, I’m thinking Punk will retain here and move onto a couple more challengers before his eventual bout with Lesnar.

Best-of-3-Falls Match for the World Championship: Champion Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan This one could really go either way. On one hand, Bryan is more over in WWE than any other point in his career with the company, and has plenty of reason to redeem himself after Wrestlemania 28. On the other hand, Sheamus is in the same boat, never being more over or more hot than he is right now. On top of that, Sheamus is rumored to be in for a lengthy run with the World title. Based on that, I’m picking Sheamus to retain in 2 falls to 1. Unlike Wrestlemania 28, I expect this match to be awesome. These two are two of my favorite current WWE stars, and they’ve had some really great matches in the past. Look for this to be a possible dark horse in regards to stealing the show.

Extreme Rules Match: John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar Despite Wrestlemania 28 being in the Rock’s hometown, I was somewhat surprised to see him come out the victor. Normally in this situation, I’d say John Cena will avenge his loss with a win here, but considering his opponent is the newly re-signed monster known as Brock Lesnar (who came with a reported $5,000,000 price tag), I don’t think that’ll be happening this time around. Lesnar will walk away from this match with a strong victory, setting up a rematch or two with Cena over the next few months, where they will likely trade wins.
