World No. 45 Thomaz Bellucci scored a stunning win over world No. 6 David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2 to move into the third round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Belluci had lost his three previous meetings against the Spaniard.
Bellucci will next meet Dutchman Robin Haase, who beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-4. The Brazilian is a former top 20 players but has struggled in the last couple of years to remain among the game’s elite.
World no. 7 Tomas Berdych beat Croatia’s Marin Cilic 7-6(3), 6-1 to set up a third round clash against Japan’s Kei Nishikori. The Japanese player beat French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, the wolrd’s top two players, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, also won their matches to move into the third round.
