Rey Mysterio Suspended for 60 Days

In somewhat surprising news, WWE Superstar and former two-time World Champion Rey Mysterio has been suspended for 60 days in accordance with WWE’s Wellness Policy. This is actually Mysterio’s second violation of the Wellness Policy, as he was suspended on August 9th, 2002 for his first violation, for taking a drug for recovery to injuries on his knee and arm. Mysterio claimed to have a prescription for the drug, but could not produce a doctor’s note to prove it, resulting in the eventual suspension. During his suspension, there was heat on Mysterio for going to Mexican newspaper Record with the story, despite not having permission from WWE to speak to the media on the matter.

After returning, Mysterio continued to work until late 2011, when he suffered an injury at a house show. An injury angle was played up on television involving Mysterio’s then-nemesis, Alberto Del Rio, which saw Del Rio “injure” him on television in order to remove him from the program. At that point in time, Mysterio was way overdue for knee surgery as it was, having skipped it several times in order to keep working.

Mysterio was expected to be fully recovered by May of this year and back on the road after that. Yesterday, it was announced on WWE’s official website that he had been suspended for a second time.

It is unknown at this time what Mysterio has done to cause his second suspension, but there is a good possibility that it is related to performance-enhancing supplements. Mysterio is no stranger to these drugs, as is evidence by his physique several years ago (compared to the earlier days of his career), and was also mentioned in the now-infamous Sports Illustrated article that discussed an HGH ring, with many WWE performers being named as customers in the illegal operation, with his name showing up on the list for purchasing nandrolone and stanozolol.

This is not a good time for Mysterio. At 37 years old with 22 years of experience, Mysterio has become a shell of his former self, with years of dangerous moves taking their toll on him, leaving him broken down, not to mention that putting off the knee surgery like he did may have caused irreparable damage to the area, similar to the Undertaker, who didn’t receive shoulder surgery in time, resulting in a shoulder that will stay partially damaged for the rest of his life. Mysterio is also on thin ice with the company, as several years ago when his contract was up, he attempted to leverage a better deal with WWE by stating that Mexican promotion AAA had offered him a much better deal (although there was interest from the company, nothing about the deal was official). Mysterio was also given the World title a second time by the company as a way to keep him happy (Mysterio is one of their biggest merchandise movers), and he once again found himself in hot water after leaving for vacation the night after he won the title, as opposed to postponing his vacation for a week in order to make a post-PPV win appearance. Mysterio complained that his trip was already booked with his family and he refused to change it, rubbing Vince McMahon and several co-workers wrong in the process.

We should have more details on Mysterio’s current suspension over the next few weeks.
