Manchester United midfielders Michael Carrick and Ashley Young are still optimistic about a change at the top of the table. With one game left in the season, arch-rivals Manchester City are the only team ahead of the defending champions, that too on goal difference.

United travel to Sunderland next week while City will host relegation contender QPR at the Etihad. Owning to the massive goal difference, City need to draw or lose at home in order to give United a chance to retain the title.

Young hoping for a QPR win

Following United’s 2-0 home win over Swansea, Michael Carrick told SkySports:

“We were watching game at Newcastle and hoping for something.

“It didn’t quite happen for us. We had to be professional and to take it on to next week. It was about winning the game. Credit to the boys after watching the game before. It can be difficult. We can only hope next week.

“Football is a funny game. Stranger things have happened in the past. We have to concentrate on ourselves. Sunderland will be a tough game. We still have a chance of winning the league.”

Meanwhile, Ashley Young, who returned to his goal scoring form with a gentle strike past Vorm, told the club’s official website:

“It’s disappointing we didn’t score more goals as it looked like we could’ve done but we’ve still got to have faith QPR can do us a favour. It comes down to the last day now and of course it will be disappointing, especially if it goes down to goal difference, and we lose it.

“I don’t want to think of any negativity, we’ve got to think positively. Fingers crossed, QPR will do us a favour and we will win the title. I’m sure Mark Hughes doesn’t want to go there and lose as they have to get a point for safety. So I’m sure he’ll set his side out in the week to go there and do the best they can and hopefully they’ll do that for us.”

The 27 year old winger joked:

“Maybe Rio [Ferdinand] can speak to his brother [Anton, about the game] but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
