Five Indians have moved into the quarter finals of the ITF $10K event in New Delhi, four of them being teenagers.
However, the talented Rutuja Bhosale, seeded no. 3, was not one of them.
Bhosale, a semi finalist at the Australian Open juniors doubles event in January, lost to Chinese Taipei’s unseeded Pei-Chi Lee 3-6, 3-6 in the second round at the DLTA complex.
Lee next takes on India’s highest ranked junior player and former national champion Ratnika Batra, who beat wild card Ambika Pande 6-1, 6-4.
Top seed Prerna Bhambri had to retire after going down 0-4 against 21 year old Poojashree Venkatesha.
16 year old Indian Etee Maheta caused a a major upset beating fourth-seeded Russian Evgeniya Svintsova 7-5, 7-6(5). She will meet another Indian teenager Natasha Palha.
Sharmada Balu scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hong Kong qualifier Ho Ching.
