INDIAN VOLLEYBALL TEAM

Volleyball is quite a popular sport in India at the school and college level and many tournaments are organised every year to promote the game. But unfortunately, at the higher levels due to lack of sponsorship not many players want to make their career in Volleyball. Almost a month ago Sahara India showed their interest in this game and have decided to promote and sponsor the senior and junior Indian men’s teams for a period of four years. Indian men’s senior team. who are currently ranked 30th in the world and 4th in Asia, will be playing the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Germany from 8-10 June 2012. In Junior World Rankings Indian boys are currently at World no 13.

INDIAN FOOTBALL TEAM

The Indian men’s Football team are  currently ranked 164th in the World from a total of 208 playing nations. In Asia India gained a place to be 31st amongst 46 nations in the rankings. Amongst the South Asian nations, the Blue Tigers are joint third with the Maldives, behind Nepal (149th) and Bangladesh (152nd), but ahead of Afghanistan (170th), Pakistan (181st), Sri Lanka (184th) and Bhutan (201st). The Indian team that qualified for the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 are  sponsored by Panasonic.

INDIAN HOCKEY TEAM

The Indian men’s Hockey team, who qualified for the London Olympics 2012 at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in New Delhi in Feb 2012, are currently at the 10th position in the FIH World Rankings with 1288 points. The Australians are at the top spot with a total of 2188 points. In Women’s Hockey the Indian Women are currently the world no 13, with a total of 1150 points. The Indian women’s hockey team were unable to qualify for the London Olympics when they lost to South Africa in the finals of Olympic Qualifiers at New Delhi. India has been drafted into Pool B in the men’s hockey which includes some of the big names. The 6 Teams in Pool B are: Germany, Netherlands, Korea, New Zealand, India and Belgium.

INDIAN CRICKET TEAM

After being thrashed 4-0 by England last year and by Australia this year, Team India’s test ranking have suffered a lot. Indian team is currently at the 4th position with a total of 111 points in the latest ICC World Test Rankings. The English team is at the top the chart with a total of 116 points. After winning the World Cup in 2011 Indian team have really not performed up to the mark in the recently concluded ODI series. The Indians were unable to qualify for the finals of  Commonwealth Bank series in Australia and also didn’t reached the finals at the Asia Cup in 2012. In the latest ODI rankings,  India is currently at 3rd spot with a total of  117 points, Aussies are at the top with 123 points. In the T20 rankings Team India is at 7th position with 103 points and England is at 1st position with 129 points.

INDIAN BASKETBALL TEAM

The Indian Men’s Basketball Team, that qualified for the Olympics in 1980, have really not performed well in the recent years at the highest level. The Indian team is currently at World no 58 out of the 82 countries. The Indian Basketball Team, with a handful of 6.6 points, are way behind the top teams of the World. U.S.A. are at the top of the FIBA rankings with a total of 852 points. In the Asian region, the Indian team is currently at the 11th spot. The Indian Women’s Basketball team are in a much better position, the Indian Women’s are currently at 39th position with 14.1 points and in the Asian region the Indian Women’s are at 6th behind China, Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia.

INDIAN TENNIS TEAM (Davis cup and Fed cup)

In the Davis Cup Rankings, the Indian Team, previously at the 20th spot, have now moved down to the 24th spot in the latest rankings. The Indian Team recently lost to Uzbekistan by 3-2  in the Asia-Oceania Group and hence were unable to qualify for the World Group Play-off. In the Fed Cup, the  Indian girls are currently at 47th position with a total of 703 points. In the Davis Cup Spain is at the top with 39179 points and in the Fed Cup Czech Republic are on the top with 29 with 29397 points.

INDIAN ARCHERY TEAM

The Indian Archers have performed outstandingly well over the last few months. Deepika Kumari, at the age of 17, made our country proud by winning silver medal last year in the Finals of World Championships in Turkey. In the recently concluded World Cup stage 2nd in Antalya she won the Gold Medal by beating some of the top names in the World of Archery. In the individual rankings she is currently at the 6th position but talking about the rank of women’s Recurve team, the Indian trio of Chekrowulo Swuro, Lasihram Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari are currently at World no 2, just  behind Korea.  The trio have already qualified for the London Olympics 2012. However, the men’s recurve team is at the 6th position behind Korea, France, China, USA and Ukraine. The Indian men’s recurve team recently won the Silver medal at the World Cup stage 2nd.

INDIAN NETBALL TEAM

Netball is not one of the more popular sports in India. But slowly and steadily Indians are improving so that they can compete with the top teams of the world. The Indian women’s netball team have participated in the CWG 2010 where they finished 12th out of 16 teams. Currently according to IFNA,   the world ranking of the Indian team is 27. The Australian team is at the 1st position while New Zealand are at 2nd spot.

INDIAN RUGBY TEAM

Rugby is also not one of the popular sports in our country and as a result the Indian team is one of the weakest. Talking about the latest world rankings by IRB, the Indian team is at 77th position with a total of 39.19 points out of the 96 teams. New Zealand, Australia and South Africa are top three teams respectively. The Indian national rugby union team was admitted to the IRB in 2001, but it took three years before India managed to win a match, beating Pakistan 56-3 in the third tier competition of the Asian Biennial tournament. Their current record in IRB-recognised internationals is two wins, one tie, and fourteen losses.

INDIAN BADMINTON TEAM

In the Individual rankings Saina Nehwal is currently the World No. 5 player but taking into account the team rankings, the Indian Badminton team is currently at the 8th spot with 8450 points. China is at the top of the table with 17000 points and after China comes Korea, Indonesia, Denmark, Japan, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei.
