Sin Cara to make a comeback soon

In a partial spoiler revealed on the internet, it has been confirmed that this week’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown will feature a video for Sin Cara, who will be making his return to the “blue brand” on June 1st.

Sin Cara (Real name: Luis Ignacio Urive Alvirde) joined the WWE in early 2011, to much fanfare. The man formerly known as Mistico in long-time Mexican lucha libre promotion CMLL was Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s first big signing after being promoted as the Executive Senior Advisor for the company in an attempt to draw an even larger audience “South of the Border”, in both live events and television ratings. Cara debuted on the March 25th episode of Monday Night RAW, taking out then- WWE United States Champion Sheamus. Cara received a major push right off the bat, earning victories over more established stars like Jack Swagger and Ted DiBiase. He wrestled in the Money in the Bank match at the PPV of the same name in July, being taken out early in the match after Sheamus powerbombed him through a ladder. The next day, it was announced on WWE.com that he had been suspended for 30 days on his first wellness policy violation, raising the ire of many fellow WWE stars who saw this as a slap in the face, considering how much hype there was surrounding him.

During this time, Hunico became somewhat of a running joke with fans, as he became known for constantly botching (messing up) his spots, reportedly due to working in a larger ring than he was used to in Mexico. The Sin Cara character returned before the 30-day suspension was up, but was now being played by Jorge Arias, better known to fans now as Hunico. This eventually led to a “Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara” feud, with the original Sin Cara winning after returning from his suspension. The feud eventually led to a mask vs. mask match, which the original Sin Cara won, leading to the new Sin Cara changing his name to Hunico name we know today.

At the Survivor Series PPV in November last year, the two wound up being on opposite teams in a traditional Survivor Series match, but once again, Sin Cara was taken out of the match early as a result of an injury. However, this time the injury was real. As he and partner Kofi Kingston were attempting a double dive to the floor on their opponents, Cara suffered a patellar tendon rupture – an injury to the quadriceps muscle-while running off the ropes, with it being aggravated further when Cara still attempted the dive and was tripped up by the ropes in the process.

At this point, Cara’s future was in doubt, as many expected him to be released after not only a suspension early in his career, but the major injury only a few months after his return as well. However, Triple H was not about to give up on his pet project so easily, and Cara has remained under contract. He returned to action at a WWE live event on May 19th of this year, defeating old rival Hunico in Florence, SC.

It is unknown what the plan for Sin Cara is upon his return to WWE television next week, but there are rumors that old CMLL rival Averno may be signed by WWE (a rumor that has been around pretty much since Cara signed his contract), and WWE are reportedly looking at other luchadores from Mexico to be brought in for feuds as well as drawing in the aforementioned highly coveted Latin audience.
