The Samir Nasri fracas

Two months after signing a contract extension with Marseille, Nasri signed for Arsenal. He was seen kissing the badge after scoring against Tottenham Hotspur and dismissed rumours linking him away from the club.

In an interview in April 2010, Samir mourned, “It is annoying. The work we do is not getting the credit it deserves because we are not winning silverware. It is unfair because I think we have more merit as a club than those who have built their teams with millions of pounds whereas Arsenal have brought in young footballers, who have come here to play a certain kind of football and who have developed. And then there’s the fans, they deserve it so much”.

“There is not much to say apart from don’t listen to all the rumours and everything that is written or said,” he said in June 2011. “In terms of talent, I feel we had the best squad of the whole league. We played the best football. We were the best team, even if Manchester United had a good season too. We have improved so much. If the boss adds some good players, I really believe a trophy will be won.”

Two months later, he signed for Manchester City: “It is a big relief. It was a long negotiation and discussion between the two clubs and now I am finally a City player. That is what I wanted from the start. I’m really happy. I was a little bit frustrated because I said to the manager I wanted to leave. I stayed for the whole pre-season, but I wanted to do the pre-season with Manchester City.”

“Arsenal have good fans, but they’re not passionate. When we played Man City, I could hear the fans all game, that’s what I want.”

Nasri then went on to win the title with City being branded “the benchwarmer” by many Arsenal fans. In May 2012, he claimed, “People at Arsenal tried to make out that I came here for the money.”

“I know hope the Arsenal fans can get on with their lives and forget me, they should celebrate their third-place achievement and I will focus on winning titles”.

Nasri now earns £185,000 a week, double his wages at Arsenal.

As much a hypocrite Samir is, to this day he has proved us [Arsenal] wrong. I won’t be as deluded to say Liverpool‘s famous saying, “next year will be our year” but I won’t be as pessimistic as Le Grove to say we won’t.

Jack Wilshere hyped up Arsenal fans by telling talkSPORT, “I can really see Arsenal winning a trophy, so maybe he spoke too soon and we can rub it in his face next year”.

Let’s hope so, Jack, let’s hope so.
