While most football fans have spent the last few weeks fascinated with Euro 2012, Chelsea have changed things at their club quite a lot. Didier Drogba left the club, while Roberto Di Matteo got the manager’s job on a full-time basis. Also, Marko Marin and Eden Hazard have both joined Chelsea, the latter costing £30 million. But where will these players fit in?
Chelsea have not signed any defenders at time of writing, yet they have sold their Portuguese right back Jose Bosingwa. If Chelsea do not make any more signings this summer, I’d personally suggest for Branislav Ivanovic to fill in at right back, allowing David Luiz and Gary Cahill to fight for the right to be Chelsea’s centre back alongside club captain John Terry. Although Ryan Bertrand has shown some promise, Ashley Cole can be expected to be Chelsea’s key left back once again.
In midfield, I believe Chelsea should go with a three. John Obi Mikel improved arguably more than any other Chelsea player after Roberto Di Matteo got the job in March, so he could well be Chelsea’s permanent holding midfielder, much like Claude Makelele was all those years ago. Alongside the Nigerian, I believe the energetic Ramires will be the perfect player to compliment the defensive and assured Mikel.

Completing the midfield three, will be Frank Lampard who I believe can still chip in with quite a few goals. Due to his age, however, it is inevitable that Lampard will have days where he will be too fatigued to play.
In order to compensate for this, Chelsea will use new signing Marko Marin, whose dynamism and energy will help the team. Michael Essien, Raul Meireles and Oriol Romeu will be expected to also feature heavily, while Josh McEachran should go on loan as I can’t see him playing much at all.
A club such as Sunderland or Aston Villa should be perfect for him and his playing style, while Swansea, where he spent half of last season may also work. New signing Oscar could also compete for a starting place in the midfield.
As for the front three, there will be plenty of competition for places. Eden Hazard has the potential to be Chelsea’s present and future. Some have even hailed him as the best young talent since Lionel Messi. His spectacular performances at Lille prove he’s more than ready to be one of Chelsea’s key players this season and for many more to come. So in my opinion, Eden Hazard should start Chelsea’s first few matches.

Another talented young winger that Chelsea are fortunate enough to have on their books is Spaniard and recent Euro 2012 winner Juan Mata. Mata’s superb first season at Stamford Bridge where at times he carried Chelsea qualifies him as more than worthy of being a starter in most of Chelsea’s games this season.
One of the few Chelsea players who would have been happy to hear of Drogba’s departure this summer is Fernando Torres. Neither Drogba or Torres really secured their place over the other’s during the year and a half they played with each other.
However, now with Drogba gone and Chelsea looking unlikely to sign any more centre forwards, Torres looks set to be Chelsea’s key striker with help from the talented youngster Romelu Lukaku, Daniel Sturridge and possibly Porto striker Hulk.

cahill will play alongside terry and liuz will be on bench whereas hazard mata torres will certainly play and there will be competition between mikel mereiles ramires lampard and essien…………essien was very good but with injuries he has suffered alot ithink marko marin will play but what about kevin de bruyne he is a great talent nobody mentioned him.

RDM always prefers 4-2-3-1, Lamps wouldn’t play much, Oscar hasn’t signed yet, we’re going to make at least a couple more signings for sure, so too early to predict any line up, Hazard and Mata both prefer the no. 10 role, and the latter will probably fill in there, Bran is our primary RB, but we need an able deputy (Maicon seems the current choice, but debuchy and Azpilicueta are also our targets apparently).

Somehow I don’t see Roberto Di Matteo playing three upfront. I think he might just opt to play a 4-2-3-1 instead. My pick for the defenders would be the same and Ryan Bertrand is equally adept at playing right back or left which means he will act as cover for Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic.
In midfield Mikel and Ramires can play as the holding midfielders with Ramires being allowed the luxury of playing box to box, Lampard should be the sole attacking midfielder with Marin acting as cover for him. Mata on the left and Hazard on the right which will allow them to play down the flank and also drift in from wide positions. Sturridge can be a back up on the right wing and can also play upfront, With Torres playing as the sole striker up front and Lukaku to be his understudy so to speak.
Oh and of course we also have bruyne this season, he could be the man to make the impact coming off the bench.
