Federer No.1, Sharapova vs Hantuchova, Capriati in Hall of Fame and other Tennis Titbits of the Week
Fed is World No 1 -We are very much used to Federer beating Sampras’ records but when Federer lost his No.1 ranking at 285 weeks just one below Sampras, many thought that he could never break that record again. But here he is – statistically, the greatest of all time! Roger Federer has now surpassed Pete Sampras as the player to have occupied the World.No.1 ranking for the longest time – 287 weeks now!
Another interesting fact is that Sampras needed 11 stints to reach that milestone whereas Federer needed only three stints including this one. So, can we put the GOAT debate to rest?!
Nadal accepts Spain’s National Flag – As we reported earlier, it is now confirmed that Rafael Nadal will bear Spain’s national flag at the Olympics in two weeks. In an official ceremony, Nadal accepted the flag from Olympic Officials of Spain.
Jennifer Capriati inducted into the Hall of Fame – Jennifer Capriati, possibly the most controversial tennis star of our times was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame this week.
“I still managed to overcome some adversity, win a Gold Medal, win some Grand Slams and stand at the podium at the Hall of Fame,” said Capriati, breaking into tears during her acceptance speech. She added, “This is one milestone I thought I’d never achieve.” . Well, you deserve it just as much as any Champion would, Capriati!
Sara Errani‘s Wimbledon Week- Sara Errani came into Wimbledon with momentum. She was the French Open finalist and was also in the Top 10 rankings. Her first round match was against Coco Vandeweghe. Errani had match point but the match was stopped due to rain. The match resumed the next day and before anything could happen, Vandeweghe doubled faulted and Errani won in seven seconds. Everyone in the crowd were having a laugh and it was quite funny.
But in a few days, Errani’s smiles were gone. In her third round match against Yaroslava Shvedova, Errani became only the second ever recipient of a Golden Set which Shvedova won 6-0 by winning all 24 straight points.
King Fed is on a vacation at Italy while Murray is stuck in rain – After winning the Wimbledon, Federer has taken his wife Mirka to a vacation at Sardinia, Italy.
Meanwhile, the runner up Andy Murray didn’t leave the country despite a great tournament and was caught in rain while shopping with his girl friend in London.
Sharapova vs Hantuchova – Okay. Sharapova is the eternal beauty but we often tend to forget that there are other ‘very’ attractive tennis players on the circuit. One such player is Daniela Hantuchova who recently posed for the ESPN Body Issue. Both of them attended the ESPY Awards last week. Whom do you think was more beautiful? Have a say!
That’s it for this week. Have a great week and we’ll meet once again before the Olympics kick off.
