London - Syria’s 400-metre hurdler Ghfran Almouhamad has been disqualified from the London Olympics after testing positive for a banned substance, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Saturday.
Almouhamad, 23, was found to have taken the performance-enhancing drug methylhexaneamine in a test August 3, two days before competition, the IOC said.
She crashed out of the competition in the first round, finishing eighth in her heat.
Several athletes have been expelled for doping since the Games started.
Among the others are American race walker Alex Schwazer, Moroccan 1500 metres runner Amine Laalou, Russian cyclist Victoria Baranova, Uzbek gymnast Luiza Galiulina, and Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku.
St Kitts and Nevis sent home sprinter Tameka Williams for taking a substance that they feared “would fall outside the accepted medical code.”
American judoka Nicholas Delpopolo was disqualified after testing positive for cannabis.
