It has been reported that the North East Lajong Super Series match between New-Zealand based Wellington Phoenix and United Sikkim, which was supposed to be held on 24th August, is going to be held in Imphal, instead of Guwahati, because of the volatile conditions in Assam currently. Tournament officials stated that the New Zealand embassy is closely following the developments at Guwahati and Assam after violence spread in the Eastern region of India. The high commissioner of the New Zealand embassy requested match officials to shift the match from Guwahati to Imphal.
Sunil Hamam, one of the tournament official said,”…they (the embassy and Phoenix team) requested us to shift the match from Guwahati to Imphal”. Though on Independence Day a bomb blast triggered panic in Imphal, the embassy did not object to hold the match in Imphal.
