WASHINGTON (AFP) –
Andre Brown ran for two touchdowns and Lawrence Tynes kicked five field goals as the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants routed hosts Carolina 36-7.
New York improved to 2-1 while the Panthers fell to 1-2 as the third week of the National Football League season kicked off in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Eli Manning flipped a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett only 3:22 into the game to put the Giants on top for good while Brown scored on one-yard runs in the second and fourth quarters.
Tynes added field goals of 27, 30, 36, 47 and 49 yards for the Giants
The Panthers avoided a shutout when Cam Newton scored on a one-yard touchdown run 8:35 into the third quarter to pull Carolina within 23-7.
The upcoming weekend brings two NFL games involving four of the NFL’s six remaining unbeaten teams, all of them at 2-0, with the Atlanta Falcons at San Diego and the Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona.
The Eagles became the first team in NFL history to win their first two games by one point each but Philadelphia has turned over the ball nine times in only eight quarters despite Michael Vick sparking late rallies for triumphs.
“I would like to see what it looks like when you don’t have the turnovers,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said. “We can be a very explosive team if we just take care of those.”
Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb leads Arizona against his former club after Arizona upset New England a week ago on the road. Reid replaced Kolb as a starter with Vick two years ago.
“It is somewhat ironic,” Kolb said. “I’ve learned through my time in Philly and through my time here, I’m not going to try and predict anything.”
Atlanta’s defensive unit forced three turnovers from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning in the first quarter last week on the way to victory and will try to force the same mistakes from San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers.
Sunday’s other NFL games find the New York Jets at Miami, Jacksonville at Indianapolis, Detroit at Tennessee, Tampa Bay at Dallas and St. Louis at Chicago.
San Francisco are at Minnesota, Kansas City at New Orleans, Buffalo at Cleveland, Cincinnati at Washington, Pittsburgh at Oakland, Houston at Denver and New England at Baltimore. Monday’s game sends the Green Bay Packers to Seattle.
