Lionel Messi's record goal-scoring streak ends

Club Atletico de Madrid v FC Barcelona - La Liga

Lionel Messi could not finish the match against Atletico Madrid due to a continued discomfort in his right leg. ‘La Pulga’ was called off at the 67th minute of the game to be examined by Dr. Medina.

His streak of scoring in his last 21 consecutive league games started on 11th November last year, in an away league match against Mallorca, where he scored 2 goals. With no goal from Leo today, the longest-ever streak of scoring in a league ended.

“Messi felt something strange in the same area of his right leg where he’s been having the discomfort since 2nd April when playing the Champions League Quarter-Final first leg against Paris Saint Germain,” said Barca boss Tito Vilanova. He further added, “Tests tomorrow will reveal how bad is the injury and how long Leo will be out.”

Vilanova also explained: “Messi was fine before the game and trained normally these weeks.”

Barca managed to make a comeback without Leo Messi, after a goal from Atletico’s star Falcao, finally ending the game at 1-2 in favour of La Liga 2012/13 Champions FC Barcelona. First tests revealed that Messi has a thigh muscle tear and will out for a month, ending his season at Vicente Calderón.
