Madhurjya Borah tops India’s biggest open Triathlon event

The fourth Hyderabad Triathlon conducted by Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) saw over 650 athletes participate in the four streams: Novice, Sprint and Olympic and Half Iron.

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, October 20, 2013 The fourth Hyderabad Triathlon conducted by Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC), was held at the Gachibowli Stadium on Sunday 20th October 2012. Over 600 athletes participated in the four streams: Duathlon, Novice, Sprint, Olympic and Half Iron. Among those who participated included national athlete Madhurjya Borah, Richard McDowell, Sunil Menon.

The Olympic Triathlon saw 100 participants slogging it out with a swim of 1.5 kms in the pool, 40 kms, and a final run of 10 kms. The Sprint Triathlon which involved 20 kms cycling / 5 kms running / 750 mtrs swim saw over 100 athletes who vied for the honours.

?Madhurjya Borah topped yet another race in the Olympic stream. This national triathlete who hails from Assam, has been training in Bangalore and dreams to represent India at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

He is closely monitored by India’s top Sports Nutritionist – Ryan Fernando, who has worked with top sportsmen like Sushil Kumar, Shikar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh.

The easiest of the three Triathlons, the Novice which involved 8 kms cycling / 2 km running / 300 mtrs swim witnessed over 50 participants some of whom were trying their luck for the first time. But the best part was that all of them completed the events.

Among the other notable participants were Rajiv Trivedi, IPS, Additional DG Sports, A.P Police who completed the Olympic Triathlon along with his two sons. For those who loved the water there was Aquathlon, and there was Duathlon which involved Cycling and running.

Hundreds of kids and families participated in the evening events. There was a special Para Triathlon Olympic Relay event for the physically challenged athletes and Aditya Mehta an above knee amputee did cycling, Kiran Kanojia, a below knee amputee did the running and Srinivasa Naidu an above knee amputee did the swimming in a sequence to complete the Olympic Level Team Triathlon.

Aditya also participated with Manish Pandey a below knee amputee who ran in the Sprint Duathlon category. These four brave hearts inspired everyone.

According to Diyanat Ali, Founder Director – GHAC, the Hyderabad Triathlon has truly acquired a national footprint and is now India’s biggest open Triathlon event. The next Hyderabad Triathlon 2014 event will witness the introduction of the Full Iron level and preferably in an open lake close to Hyderabad.
