Olympiakos, the reigning Greek champions, have opened talk with Arsenal over the prospect of permanent signing of on-loan striker Joel Campbell.
The Costa Rican has grown on to become a key member of the squad at the Karaiskakis stadium, after having joined them in the summer on a loan.
He had joined the Gunners in 2011 from the Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa and was ineligible to play for the London outfit due to a lack of work permit until last summer, when he was granted a word permit following a loan spell at Real Betis.
Arsene Wenger decided to ship him for another loan term on the continent. The 21-year-old has been subject of preliminary negotiations between the Greek club and Arsenal, with Olympiakos keen on a permanent deal, according to reports.
“It is a matter between the two clubs. However, from the beginning it was difficult, since Joel belongs to a big club like Arsenal and this, as you know, makes things more complicated”, said Campbell’s agent.
“It’s a critical year for Campbell. There is also the World Cup ahead. But, as I said, he is happy in Greece and Olympiakos.
“He would not be happy to be in one of the top leagues but to stay on the bench”.
A reported buy-out fee in the region of 8 million euros (£6.6m) has been touted for the young striker.
