Asian Games 2014: Indian men's compound team storm into final, to play Korea for gold

Impressive shooting from Indians

The Indian archery camp have something to rejoice about at the Incheon Asian Games as the men’s compound team stormed into the final beating Iraq 231-227 at the Gyeyang Asiad Archery Field on Thursday. The Indian team comprising Rajat Chauhan, Sandeep Kumar and Abhishek Verma were razor-sharp as they consistently scored 9s and 10s to outwit their Iraqi opponents. The Iranian team, comprising Esmaeil Ebadi, Majid Gheidi and Amir Kazempour, had 14 10's for a total of 227. What hurt the Iranians was a poor seven in the second set and an eight in the penultimate shot.

In the other semi-final, South Korea just managed to edge past the Philippines 228-227 in what was a closely contested event. The South Korean team of Yonghee Choi, Lihong Min and Youngho Yang got a total of 12 10's while the Filipino trio of Ian Patrick Chipeco, Paul Marton Dela Cruz and Earl Benjamin Yap had 13 10's.

India will take on Korea in the final

The final appearance of the Indians will serve as a big boost for the archery contingent, who have been looking to make a big impression at this multi-sport event. Indian archers will have a break tomorrow and will now play hosts Korea for the gold medal on Saturday. The Indian men’s compound team earlier prevailed over Malaysia 234-229 in the quarterfinals. The Indians had launched their campaign getting the better of Qatar 233-218. A gold medal for the men’s compound team will be a big thing for the sport in the country.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s compound team comprising Puryasha Sudhir Shende, Trishna Deb and Surekha Joythi Vennam put up a valiant effort reaching the semifinals before going down fighting 224-226 to Chinese Taipei. There is no bronze medal in this event for reaching the semifinals as a bronze medal play-off tie is held between the two losing semifinalists.

The Indian women’s compound team comprising Puryasha Sudhir Shende, Trishna Deb and Surekha Joythi Vennam had earlier got past Kazakhstan in a dramatic shootout after both teams were locked 229-229 at the end of the regular rounds. Indian eves will face Iran for a bronze medal on Saturday. If all goes well, India could end up with a gold and a bronze on Saturday.
