Vikas Gowda, who won the silver medal in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, hurled the discus to 63.64m to clinch the gold medal in men’s discus throw event at Glasgow.

Gowda, who hurled the discus to 64.32m to top the qualification round at Hampden Park yesterday, achieved his best throw of 63.64m in his third attempt.

This achievement is particularly special for Indian fans as with this medal, Vikas Gowda becomes the first Indian man to win a field event gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The Mysore-born Gowda, who now lives and trains in Maryland, United States, has given India its first medal in athletics in these games.

Because of the continuous rain at the Hampden Park, it was a bit difficult for the throwers to make their grip as the throwing area was totally wet.

Apostolos Parellis of Cyprus won the silver and Jason Morgan of Jamaica grabbed the bronze medal

With this medal India has now gone up to 5th place and their medal tally has risen up to 47 medals which includes 13 golds, 20 silvers and 14 bronze medals.
