Ennis-Hill gave one of the best performances of her career after her Olympics win at the recently concluded Diamond League Games in London, or the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games. She jumped a season best of 6.37m on Day 2 of the Games, which she finished the 200m event in 24.39 seconds. Completing the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.79s yesterday, Ennis-Hill secured a hat-trick of events.

Despite this, however, she said on Sunday that her coach Toni Minichello was not sure she should participate in the games if she was not at optimal fitness. He told The Telegraph “There is no point in going [to Beijing] and finishing, fifth, eighth or 20th,” he said. “I wouldn’t go, I’d just train instead and then move on next year towards Rio, which is the critical thing. We are judging any decision we make in reflection of Rio.”

Her compatriot Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Liverpool participated in the Anniversary Games and, alongside Ennis-Hill, is in contention to participate in the Olympics at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

According to the BBC, the full squad to participate in China will be announced later today.

Ennis-Hill is enthusiastic about the games, telling the BBC in an interview “I want to win a medal.”
