Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala was rocked by another suicide attempt – the fifth such incident this year – early Wednesday morning. The athlete, identified as Nithin U, is a junior national medallist in 100m and 200m. He took the extreme step after alleged harassment by seniors in the hostel.

The teenager was found in a pool of blood in his room by his roommate early in the morning and was taken to the Medical College Hospital immediately. It is claimed that he slashed his wrist using a broken piece of glass.

“The boy tried to harm himself. He created a small cut on his left arm using a glass piece and was immediately rushed to the Trivandrum Medical college hospital here where he was given first aid and discharged,” Dr G Kishore, Principal of the SAI centre said.

“It was only a superficial cut. It appears he was under some mental tension,” Dr Kishore revealed. “We are probing the incident to find out what actually happened. A senior official of SAI has been deputed along with two others to probe the incident.”

After being stitched up, the athlete, 19, was released from the hospital despite being referred to the psychiatry wing.

According to SAI coaches, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the youngster, who hails from Chirayinkeezhu, bought merchandise online and forced his juniors to buy it at double the prize.

“He was caught by his seniors on Tuesday and firmly told that the matter would be brought to the notice of SAI authorities if he continued to bully newcomers. This is what we have come to know after initial probe,” said one of the coaches.

With this being the fifth such incident at SAI, there are calls for more transparency in the dealings at the institute.
