New Delhi : Terry Fox Marathon

Terry Fox Marathon

The Annual Terry Fox Run is held on the second Sunday of September every year all over the world to gather funds for cancer research and to commemorate the memory of a brave young man. Terry Fox was a young, 19 year old diagnosed with cancer which resulted in his right leg being amputated above the knee. Despite this he wanted to raise awareness of this dreaded disease by running the width of Canada from coast to coast. Starting from the East coast, he ran a distance of 5400 kms with a prosthetic leg, before he had a relapse and succumbed thereafter to the disease. He managed to generate awareness as well as $ 24 mn towards cancer research.

The Terry Fox Marathon run is organized and the finances collected are managed by the Indo Canadian Cancer Research Foundation (ICCR), a nonprofit organization (eligible for 80G tax exemption). The money collected as a pledge from the participants is utilized exclusively for cancer research in India – for the last Terry Fox Marathon run in 2009 the funds were given to the Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital at AIIMS, New Delhi, and the research carried out has resulted in international publications and a new method of surgery in cancer.
