2012 London Olympics Gold medalist Sally Pearson will miss the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing due to a wrist injury. The 28-year-old Australian sustained the injury during the Diamond League meet that were held in Rome earlier this month and will undergo a surgery on Tuesday.

Expressing disappointment in not being able to make it to China, Pearson added that she hasn't taken a break in the past 12 years and felt the time away from sport would help her in the lead-up to next year’s Olympics in Brazil.

"It's very disappointing for me, but I guess I haven't had a break since 2003. I think this will be a very good mental and physical break for me leading into the Rio Olympics next year,” she told reporters.

Pearson further said that the entire experience of going through a surgery would be a traumatic one for her as she has never had one before.

"I've never broken a bone, I've never had stitches or surgery before. Doing all of that in one, in a different country, was very traumatic for me,” she said.

Pearson will be missed: Hilliard

Athletics Australia head coach Craig Hilliard said that Pearson’s absence willl hamper his country's chances in the Championships, but admitted that the athlete needed time to get over this phase.

"It will be a big loss but the critical thing is that she needs time mentally and physically to get over this. Sally's our team captain and she gives great leadership and gets on really well with all the athletes,” he said.
