2015 Sudirman Cup: China blank Germany 5-0

Li Xuerui overcame an initial hiccup to win her match against Karin Schnasse

Defending champions China blanked Germany 5-0 in the first match of the 2015 Sudirman Cup, being played in Dongguan, China. Here’s a roundup of the results from that rubber:

1.Mixed Doubles: Ma Xin/XuChen(CHN) vs Michael Fuchs/Birget Fuchs(GER)

The Germans took an early lead in this contest, but the Chines came storming back to make it 11-7 at the break. There was no looking back for them after that as they went on to take the first game 21-16. The second game once again saw the German pair go into the lead early but like the first game, the advantage was short-lived and they eventually went on to lose the game and match in straight games.

Final scoreline: Ma Xin/XU Chen beat Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels 21-16 22-20

2.Men’s Singles: Lin Dan(CHN) vs Marc Zwiebler(GER)

What started off as a keen contest was turned into a no-contest by the World No.2, particularly in the second game. The first game saw both players go neck-to-neck but it was Dan who took the lead and never let off it, taking the game eventually 21-11.

The second game saw the Chinese star race to a 7-1 early lead. The German tried to make a comeback into the match, but it went in vain in the end as the 31-year-old won quite convincingly in the end.

Final scoreline: Lin Dan beat Marc Zwiebler 21-11 21-11

3.Men’s Doubles: Johannes Schoettler/Michael Fuchs(GER) vs Hong Wei/ Chai Biao(CHN)

Unfortunately, what seemed like an exciting match proved to be a damp squib after Schoettler had to withdraw midway through to the first game owing to a hamstring injury.

Final Scoreline: Hong Wei/Chai Biao beat Johannes Schoettler(R) /Michael Fuchs 13-10

4.Women’s Singles: Li Xuerui(CHN) vs Karin Schnasse(GER)

The German began the contest on a positive note, taking an early 6-3 lead and further strengthening it to 11-8. The break at that mark though proved to be the turning point as the World No.1 came roaring back to take the game 21-17 in her favour.

The second game, though, proved to be a completely one-sided one as the numero uno ranked player won it quite emphatically to make it 4-0 for her side.

Final scoreline: Li Xuerui beat Karin Schnasse 21-17 21-8

5.Women’s Doubles: Isabel Herttrich/Birgit Michels vs Yu Yang/Tang Yuanting(CHN)

Heading into the fixture, the Geman were hoping to avoid a 5-0 whitewash but that didn't prove to be the case as the Chinese pair won the match with the same margin to complete whitewash on the Germans.

Final scoreline: Yu Yang/Tang Yuanting beat Isabel Herttrich/Birgit Michels 21-14 21-14
