Commonwealth Games 2014: Saina Nehwal withdraws from the event due to fitness worries

Saina Nehwal’s pull out is a huge setback for India’s badminton hopes in Glasgow

Disappointment for Indian fans

In what comes as a big blow to Indian fans, Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to August 4 in Glasgow.

Saina has not yet recovered from blister injuries on both her feet sustained during the Australian Open Super Series last month. She became the first non-Chinese shuttler to win a Super Series after clinching the Australian Open this year.

Recuperate from Injury

Saina said: "I had suffered a groin injury during the first round in Australia and then there were those blisters on my leg but I still won the title. After I came back I had two and a half weeks but I took one week to recover, so hardly got a week to train. So, I decided to pull out. It's heartbreaking for me as well,"

The Olympic bronze medallist is hoping to get fit for the Asian games later this year.

"I did start practicing and I hoped that I could still go and play, but then I didn't want to exert myself too much. I don't want to risk an injury again. I have to be fit for the rest of the season. There are two more important and equally big tournaments coming up next -- the World Championship and Asian Games. So I had to take a call," said Saina.

"It is important to go into such big tournaments knowing you are 100 per cent and especially when I am playing well and have won an event. It will enhance my chances of winning a medal for India," she added.

The current World No. 7 had won gold in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games after saving a match point against Malaysian Wong Mew Choo in the final. India had managed to win four medals in Badminton in the last edition of the games.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnapa struck gold in the women’s doubles, while Parupalli Kashyap won bronze in the men’s singles. India had also clinched silver in the team event.

Saina will be replaced by P V Sindhu in the team event. India are seeded third at the Glasgow games.
