Indian Badminton League (IBL) to be upgraded to Premier Badminton League (PBL)

Rivals will turn teammates in this edition

In view of taking the scale of badminton to another level, the BAI (Badminton Association of India) organising committee has decided to rechristen the Indian Badminton League (IBL) as Premier Badminton League (PBL).

The League, which is scheduled for Jan 2 -17, 2016 is slated to be the largest ever badminton tournament and is slated to bring some of the most noted names in the field of the sport together.

The decision to give a new name to the event was taken after much deliberation and keeping in mind that the committee aims to take the tournament to a global level in the years to come.

The name also brings much distinction to the tournament and raises the bar for all the participants. PBL will also ensure that the league isn’t associated solely with any country and takes a global platform.

“It was a well thought out decision to change the name of the event at this stage,” Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta, President, BAI said. “We want to see Premier Badminton League take global stage with more traction from all the stakeholders. We aim to make PBL the most sought after tournament in the world.”

Most badminton associations across the world have already consented to send their players for the coveted tournament despite the Olympics being next year. This reflects the seriousness with which the associations and players themselves have taken the tourney.

The rousing action will kick-start on 2nd January, 2016 in Mumbai with an extravagant opening ceremony and the Grand Finale will take place here in Delhi on 17th January, 2016. While Indian badminton players are engraving their names across the world, the Premier Badminton League will bring together India’s top badminton players along with international players on the same platform wherein they will showcase high-class action in front of the sports loving citizens of India.
