Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa move into semifinal of Canada Open

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa moved into their second consecutive semifinal

The Indian women’s doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa moved into the semifinals of the 2015 Canada Open, after beating Chan Kaka Tzk Ka and Yuen Suen Ying of Hong Kong 21-19 21-13 in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Game 1 witnessed an enthralling battle between the 2 pairs but like in the case with most close games, the pair who capitalise on the key moments are the ones who come out on the top and Gutta and Ponnappa did exactly that, winning and then converting the lone game point opportunity at the 20-19 mark, to take the crucial one-game lead.

After a gripping first game, the second game began in a similar manner, but, it seemed like the tide began to shift towards the Indian pair when at the 6-6 mark, when they won 4 points consecutively to go 10-6 up. But just as they thought, they were looking to seal the match, the Hong Kong pair stormed back to first tie the match at 10-10 and then won 3 out of the next 6 points to make it 13-13.

Realising that the match might be starting to slip away from their grasp, Gutta and Ponnappa brought their A-Game out to win the next 8 points straight to clinch the game and the match and move into the final four.

They will now face Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto of Japan in the semis.

Final Scoreline- Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa(IND) beat Chan Kaka Tzk Ka/Yuen Suen Ying 21-19 21-13
