India’s Parupalli Kashyap progressed through to the second of the 2015 World Championships after beating Erik Meijs of Netherlands 21-17 21-10 in the opening round on Monday.

The Indian began the match on a tentative note, trailing his opponent 8-4, and then trailed by a further 5 points at the interval, at the score of 11-6. Following the break, Kashyap looked to play more towards the net and that seemed to have paid off for a while as he won 3 out of the next 5 points to reduce the deficit to 9-12.

That defiecit was turned over turn moents later as he won 3 more points to first level scores at 12-12. It proved to be a topsy-turvy contest after that as Meijs took a slender lead before Kashyap levlled the score again at 14-14. But it was Kashyap who broke the deadlock this time, and then took a two-point lead at the 17-15 mark. Courtesy a few errors by Meijs, near the net and some good play on his part as well, the 28-year-old managed to hold on to the lead to win the opening game 21-17.

The Indian carried the confidence from his opening agme win into the next game, racing away to 7-1 lead and then leading 11-2 at the interval mark. After the break, Kashyap continued to have his stamp over proceedings as Meijs seemed to have no answers for the Indian’s play and eventually sealed the game 21-10 to book a place in the second round of the competition.

Talking about the match, Kashyap said he found the conditions tough but found his rhythm as the match progressed.

“I think today was a OK match..Just felt the conditions were tough at the start of the match but got a good rhythm at the end. The opponent played well at the start. Next match will be tougher, so need to prepare well for it. “
