PV Sindhu moves into second round of Chinese Taipei Open

PV Sindhu off to a victorious start

India’s PV Sindhu moved into the second round of the Chinese Taipei Open after Lindewani Fanetri of Indonesia 21-19 21-19 in the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday.

The opening game saw both players go toe-to-toe, exchanging leads consistently until they reached a deadlock at the 16-16 mark, where the 14th ranked Indian won an important streak of 3 points to go 19-16 up. That lead though didn't last for a long time as her opponent came rushing back to level the match at 19-19. But Sindhu held her nerve very well to first seal a game point and then convert that to take the game 21-19.

The two-time World Championships bronze medalist then carried the momentum, taking an early 5-1 lead. But Fanetri pulled the game back excellently, to win 4 out of the next 5 points to make it 5-6 and then brought the match back on level terms by squaring it at 9-9. Following that, both players exchanged leads, but the key turn happened at the 14-14 mark, when Fanetri went 16-14 in front, only for her Indian opponent to pull it back and then win 4 points on the trot gain 4 match points. Although Fanetri tried to keep the match alive, Sindhu held her nerve to take the game and move into Round 2.

Sindhu will face Tzu Ying Tai of Chines Taipei in Round 2.
