India’s PV Sindhu marched her way into the quarterfinal of the 2016 Rio Olympics after beating Tzu Ying Tai of Chinese Taipei 21-13 21-15 in the Round of 16 match on Monday.
Right from the opening point of the match, the 21-year-old Indian put her opponent under pressure with her long hits and ensured that one key area that every player need to wary off against Tai -the net- was well covered. Her anticipation near the net and judgement away from it was spot on and she went into the interval with an 11-9 lead.
The other side of the break saw the Indian continue to dominate proceedings, as she gave Tai no breathing space, ensuring that the pressure remained intact. Unsurprisingly, Tai started to wilt beyond a point as the errors started to creep in and the Indian eventually clinched the game 21-13.
The second game began on the same note as the first as the Indian held all the aces in the fixture, combining fine net play with exceptional smashes. She was also helped by a spree of errors from Tai and led 15-8 at one point.
After a few late hiccups, she closed the game 21-15 to march her way into the quarterfinal of the Olympics where she will fac: e Wang Yihan of China.
