2015 US Open Grand Prix Gold: Round-up of Day 3 results

It was a rather satisfactory third day for Indian shuttlers at the Yonex Suffolk County Community College US Open Grand Prix Gold tournament.

While in men’s singles, two out of three players went down in the third round; there was a ray of hope in the doubles section as the pairs of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa and Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy progressed to the last eight in women’s doubles and men’s doubles respectively.

Let’s take a look at the results of day 3 category wise:

Men’s Singles

B. Sai Praneeth came out on top in a tight finish

16th seed B.Sai Praneeth got the better of Chinese player Yuxiang Huang in the third round. Sai Praneeth, who is ranked 38th in the world defeated the World ranked 139 Chinese shuttler 21-17, 16-21, 21-18 in a match which lasted for 58 minutes. 22-year-old Hyderabadi will now take on the 12th seed and World No.12 Ng Ka Long Angus for a place in semis.

There was a bit of disappointment in the remaining two matches in this category as Ajay Jayaram and R.M.V Gurusaidutt went down to their respective opponents.

14th seed Jayaram lost to top seed Chou Tien Chen of Taipei in a closely fought two-game match. 28-year-old Indian shuttler, who is ranked 33rd in the world lost to World No. 7 Chou by a scoreline of 18-21, 19-21.

R.M.V Gurusaidutt gave a tough fight to 9th seeded Japanese player Takuma Ueda before going down 22-20, 13-21, 21-16 in a third round match which lasted for an hour and 12 minutes.

Women’s Doubles

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa registered a comfortable win

2011 World Championships bronze medallist pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa entered the Quarterfinals after defeating the Turkish duo of Ozge Bayrak and Neslihan Yigit 21-10, 21-18.

Seeded 4th and ranked 15th in the world, the Indian pair will now take on the 7th seed and World No. 17 German pair of Carla Nelte and Johanna Goliszewski to enter the last four of the tournament.

Men’s Doubles

World ranked 26 Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy caused a huge upset in the second round as they stunned the second seed and World ranked 15 Japanese pair of Noriyasu Hirata and Hirokatsu Hashimoto 21-18, 14-21, 21-19 in a thrilling encounter which lasted for almost an hour.

Indians, who had a 1-0 win-loss record over their higher ranked opponents prior to this match kept their calm at crucial moments of the match to draw the curtains on the challenge of the Japanese pair.

Indian pair will now lock horns with the World No. 32 English pair of Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge.
