PV Sindhu – two victories on the opening day

Indian women have kicked off their Uber Cup 2016 campaign in perfect fashion with a 5-0 rout of the Australian team at Kunshan Sports Centre Stadium in Jiangsu, China, today.

Facing the only representatives from Oceania in what was destined to be an uneven contest, Indian shuttlers did not disappoint at all. Emulating the hosts from the previous day, they clinched all five matches without losing even a single set.

It all started with Saina Nehwal defeating Wendy Chen 22-20,21-14 within 36 minutes to settle the first clash which later turned out to be the closest encounter of the day.

PV Sindhu, then, closed the second fixture against Joy Lai 21-12,21-11 in 25 minutes to take the Indians 2-0 ahead of Australia.

In the first women’s doubles match, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa didn’t disappoint either, stealing an easy 21-9,21-15 victory over Gronya Somerville and Wendy Chen to ensure an opening day victory for the team.

More was waiting for the Aussies with Ruthvika Shivani Gadde smashing her way to send Tiffany Ho packing 21-5,21-11 in a match that didn’t last beyond 25 minutes.

PV Sindhu, then paired up with N Sikki Reddy against the Australian duo of Leanne Choo and Joy Lai to beat them 21-12 in both sets to complete a perfect 5-0 score for the day.

Having started proceedings on a high, the Indians will look to carry this momentum forward to when they next face 9th seeds Germany here at Kunshan, tomorrow.
