Yonex Canada Open- Round-up of Day 3 Results

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa progressed through to the quarterfinals

It was an average third day for the Indian shuttlers at the Yonex Canada Open Grand Prix tournament. While in men’s singles two out of the three progressed through to the next round; there was a setback as the pairs of Manu Attri and B.Sumeeth Reddy and Tarun Kona and N.Siki Reddy were shown the exit doors in men’s and mixed doubles respectively.

Best news of the day came from the women’s doubles section where both the pairs entered the last eight of the tournament. Let’s take a look at the results category wise :-

Men’s Singles

9th seed and World No. 32 Ajay Jayaram knocked out the World ranked 220 Indonesian shuttler Wisnu Yuli in a tough three game match. 28-year-old Indian started the match on a positive note as he took a strong three-point lead before the mid-game interval of the opening game. He further stretched his lead by wrapping few quick points. Leading by 16-12, Jayaram clinched the next five points in a row to seal the game 21-12.

The second game was a lot more evenly contested as both the players were fighting hard for each and every point. This game went neck to neck till 17-all but it was at this point when the 20-year old Indonesian changed his gears as he grabbed the next four points on a trot to back level the match.

The third game was a completely one-sided affair as Jayaram didn’t give his opponent even a single chance to come close. He will now take on the top seed and World No. 14 german shuttler Mark Zwiebler to seal the place in last four.

B. Sai Praneeth, who finished as the semi-finalist in the U.S Open Grand Prix Gold last week, continued his good performance as he defeated the World No. 124 Niluka Karunaratne of Sri-Lanka 14-21 21-15 21-15 in a 57-minute match. Indian shuttler, who jumped five places in the latest BWF Rankings to become the World No. 33 will now play the former World No. 1 Malaysian ace Lee Chong Wei.

There was a bit of disappointement as 11th seed Anand Pawar went down to 2nd seed and World no. 18 Xue Song of China 15-21 13-21 in a third round match which lasted for just 39 minutes.

Women’s Doubles

Young Indian pair of Pradnya Gadre and N.Siki Reddy caused a huge upset as they stunned the 4th seeded German pair of Johanna Goliszewski and Carla Nelte by a scoreline of 21-15 21-11. The Indian pair, who are ranked 43rd in the world thrashed the World No. 19 pair in just 31 minutes.

They will now take on Tse Ying Suet and Pook Lon Yan of Hong Kong in the round of eight.

Olympians and U.S Open Grand Prix Gold semifinalist, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa came back from a set down to enter the Quarterfinals of this $50,000 category 4 tournament. 3rd seed and ranked 13th in the world, the experienced Indian pair clinched the victory against their Dutch opponents Samantha Baming and Iris Tabeling by a score of 16-21 21-16 21-17 in 47 minutes.

Men’s Doubles

Expectations in men’s doubles came to an end as the U.S Open runners-up pair of Manu Attri and B.Sumeeth Reddy went down to Jhe Huei and Lu Chia Pin of Taipei in a nail-biting encounter. Both the games went down the wire but it was the Taipei pair who prevailed over the higher ranked Indian opponents.

Indians, who are ranked 24th in the world lost to the qualifiers and World No. 226 Taipei pair by 19-21 19-21.

Mixed Doubles

Unseeded Indian pair of Tarun Kona and N.Siki Reddy were absolutely no match to the top seeds Michael Fuchs and birgit Michels of Germany as they lost 15-21 15-21 in just 31 minutes.

Women’s Singles

Tanvi Lad was the only remaining player in this category. She gave a tough fight to her Canadian opponent Li Michelle in the opening game but failed to convert this good start into a good finish as she lost the game 14-21. 22-year old Indian, who is ranked 118th in the BWF Rankings lost the second game with ease by 13-21.

With this defeat Indian challenge in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles in now over.
