Women’s Singles category:-

It was the battle of the two Chinese Badminton giants in the final of the women’s singles event. World No. 5 and London Olympics silver medalist Wang Yihan was up against the World No. 3 and current Asian Champion Wang Shixian.

Both the players gave their best to win the prestigious USD 350,000 tournament but it was the World No. 5 Wang Yihan who prevailed over the higher ranked compatriot.

Wang Shixian gave a tough fight to the World No. 5 in the initial part of the first game but from 8-6 Yihan won seven consecutive points to make the scores 15-6. Wang Shixian tried her best to make a comeback in the game but was unable to cut down the big lead and hence lost the game 13-21.

Wang Shixian was at her level best in the next game as she didn’t gave her opponent a single chance to settle into the game and easily won by 21-16.

Yihan’ start to the decider game was not quite good as she was trailing by four points before the mid game interval but she made an outstanding comeback after the interval, trailing by 8-11 at one stage, Yihan won six points in a row to take a commendable lead of three points and after that Yihan completely outclassed her compatriot and won the game and hence the match 13-21 21-16 15-21 in an hour and 16 minutes.

Mixed Doubles category:-

In the first final of the day the unseeded English pair of Chris Adcock and Gabrielle White defeated the Chinese pair of Cheng Liu and Bao Yixin 21-14 24-22 in a match which lasted 40 minutes.

English pair had a dream run in this tournament as they defeated the fifth seeded Malaysian pair of Soon and Goh in the quarters and then stunned the top seeded Chinese pair of Nan Zhang and Yunlei Zhao in the semifinals.

The first game was completely one-sided as the pair of Adcock and White completely outclassed their lower ranked Chinese opponents. The English pair kept their calm in the closely fought second game and took the game 24-22 in 22 minutes.

Men’s Doubles category:-

It was an all Korean affair in the final of the men’s doubles category of the tournament. It was a closely fought final match but it was the unseeded pair of Lee Yong Dae and Yeon Yoo who got the better of their counterparts and 4th seeded Ki Jung Kim and Sa Rang Kim.

In the first game the unseeded pair of Dae and Yoo were absolutely no match to the 4th seeds as they completely surrendered in front of them and hence lost the game 12-21 but they made an outstanding comeback in the next game as they took the game 15-21 in just 17 minutes.

The third and decisive game of the match was the most interesting one; both the pairs were fighting hard for each and every point. Trailing by 10-15 at one stage Jung and Rang fought back strongly and reduced the lead margin by just two. Jung and Rang gave their best to save two championships points at 20-16 but were unable to save the next one and hence lost the game 18-21.

Women’s Doubles category:-

In women’s doubles, the fifth seeded Chinese pair of Yixin Bao and Jinhua Tang defeated their compatriots and unseeded pair of Ou Dongni and Tang Yuanting 18-21 21-16 21-15.

Dongni and Tang, who caused a huge upset in the semifinal after defeating the 2nd seeded and Olympic bronze medalist Danish pair of Christinna Pedersen and Kamila Ryter Juhl started the match on a positive note as they kept their nerves in a closely fought opening game and won 18-21.

Denmark Open Superseries winners Jinhua Tang and Bao Yixin came back quite strongly in the next game as they took a healthy lead of seven points at the beginning of the second game. This lead proved to be very crucial till the end as they won the game quite comfortably by 21-16.

Third game was a lot similar to the second game. Again the seeded pair started the game quite well, they took the initial lead, maintained it till the end and won 15-21.

Men’s Singles category:-

In the last match of the day on Hong Kong Coliseum – Court 1, the World No. 1 Malaysian shuttler Lee Chong Wei completely thrashed the World No. 13 Indonesian shuttler Soni Dwi Kuncoro 21-13 21- in a match which ended in just 33 minutes.

Kuncoro, who stunned the World No. 4 Japanese shuttler Kenichi Tago in the quarterfinals was absolutely no match to the two time Olympic Silver medalist Malaysian star.

After losing the opening game in 18 minutes Kuncoro totally surrendered in the next game as he lost the game 21-9 in just 15 minutes.
