15 countries eyeing four FIBA Wild Cards for Spain 2014

After the completion of the continental championships of FIBA Zones and teams qualified for the Spain 2014, four spots are to be granted by FIBA as the wild card and fifteen countries have made their application for the wild card to participate in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be held in Spain from 30 August – 14 September 2014.

Following countries have filed applications for the wild card:

  • FIBA Africa (1) – Nigeria
  • FIBA Americas (3) – Brazil, Canada and Venezuela
  • FIBA Asia (2) – China and Qatar
  • FIBA Europe (9) – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Poland, Russia and Turkey

FIBA will make the decision in its Central Board meeting on the weekend of 1 -2 February 2014 in Barcelona, Spain. The draw for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup will then take place the following day, Monday, 3 February 2014.

No more than three national teams from one FIBA Zone can receive the wild card for the SPAIN 2014. The four recipients of the wild cards will join following already qualified countries in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

  • 1 Host Country: Spain
  • 1 Olympic 2012 Champion: USA
  • 3 teams from FIBA Africa: Angola, Egypt and Senegal
  • 4 teams from FIBA Americas: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Dominican Republic
  • 3 teams from FIBA Asia: Iran, Philippines and Korea
  • 6 teams from FIBA Europe: France, Lithuania, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Serbia
  • 2 teams from FIBA Oceania: Australia and New Zealand
