2013 EuroBasket second round: Croatia, Spain and Slovenia win on day 4

Croatia, Spain and hosts Slovenia won their respective matches on the day four of the second round of the 38th edition of the FIBA Europe Basketball Championship for Men, better known as 2013 EuroBasket.

Following are the results of the Group F matches of day 4 of the second round:

Croatia 76 – 68 Italy

Croatia defeated Italy in the first match of the day 4 of the second round of the championship to move up to the second position of Group F. Italy took the first quarter 17 – 8, while Croatia took the second quarter 23 – 19. After the half time break, Croatia took the third quarter 26 – 9 to pave it’s way to victory. Although Italy showed some resistance by taking the last quarter 23 – 19, it was not enough to stop Croatia to win the match. Bojan Bogdanovic top scored with 18 points for Croatia while Luigi Datome netted game high 24 points for Italy. With the loss, Italy lies in fourth position in group F standing.

Spain 82 – 56 Finland

Defending Champions of EuroBasket, Spain showed their class and thrashed minnows Finland, 82 – 56 in the day 4 of the second round of the championship. Spain won all the four quarters 18 – 1, 24 – 15, 15 – 14 and 25 – 12 respectively to win the match and climb into third position in group F. With the loss, Finland lies at the bottom of the table. José Calderón netted 23 points for Spain while Petteri Koponen netted 17 points for Finland.

Greece 65 – 73 Slovenia

Hosts Slovenia moved into top of group F after they beat Greece 73 – 65 in the last match of the day 4 of the second round of the championship. Slovenia took first two quarters 26 – 13 and 17 – 14 respectively while third quarter was a tie with both teams scoring 19 points each. Greece took the last quarter 19 -11. Vassilis Spanoulis scored 21 points for Greece while Goran Dragic scored game high 28 points for the hosts. With the loss, Greece are in the fifth position of the group F standing.

With the completion of the Day 3 of the second round of the championship, here is how the Group F standing looks like:

GROUP F

  1. Slovenia: 7 pts.
  2. Croatia: 7 pts.
  3. Spain: 6 pts.
  4. Italy: 6 pts.
  5. Greece: 5 pts.
  6. Finland: 5 pts.

There are 5 teams each in Group E and F in the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the championship.

Top six teams from 2013 EuroBasket – excluding Spain, as they have already qualified as hosts – will get their ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup. 24 European nations are participating at the ongoing event.
