Serbia confirmed their ticket to 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup by grabbing the 7th spot in the ongoing 38th edition of the FIBA Europe championship for Men (also known as 2013 EuroBasket), which is being held in Slovenia.
In 7/8 place classification match, Serbia outplayed Italy 76 – 64 to secure 7th place in the Championship and most importantly to grab the last spot from FIBA Europe to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Serbia took the first quarter 27 – 11. Italy took the second and third quarter 16 – 14 and 17 – 14 respectively, but Serbia hold their nerve and took the last quarter 21 – 20 to confirm their participation in the next year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup. Nenad Krstic scored 17 points while Nemanja Bjelica collected 12 points for Serbia while Luigi Datome netted game-high 19 points for Italy.
Serbia along with France, Croatia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovenia and hosts Spain will represent FIBA Europe in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The final of the 2013 EuroBasket will be played between France and Lithuania on Sunday while Spain will face Croatia for the bronze on the same day.
