Cuba stunned Canada to win the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship title for women being held at Xalapa, Mexico.

In the final of the championship, Cuba defeated Canada 79 – 71 to win the gold medal.

Cuba took the first and second quarter 20 – 15 and 25 – 15 respectively to go to the halftime break with comfortable 15-points lead.

After the break, Canada tried to come back to the match by taking third and fourth quarter 17 – 13 and 24 – 11 respectively, but it was too late to stop Cuba to win the championship.

Tamara Tanisha netted 25 points for Canada while Gelis Gonzalez netted 19 points for the winners.

In the 3rd place match, Brazil defeated Puerto Rico to claim third spot and most importantly, get the ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Championship for women. Three medalists from the Championship, Cuba, Canada and Brazil, qualified for the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

Yamara Amargo of Cuba was declared as the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.
