2013 FIBA Americas Championship: Jamaica, Mexico, Venezuela and Dominican Republic win

Jamaica, Mexico, Venezuela and Dominican Republic won their respective matches on Day 2 of the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship at Caracas. Here are the results:

Jamaica 81 – 75 Argentina

After eliminating Brazil from the first round of the championship, Jamaica surprised Argentina 81-75 in the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.

Jamaica took the first quarter 17 – 16 while Argentina took the second quarter 15 – 11. After the break, Argentina took the third quarter 24 – 22 but Jamaica surprised Argentina in the last quarter by winning the deciding quarter 31 – 20 to win the match.

Weyinmi Rose scored 24 points for Jamaica while Luis Scola racked up 22 points and got 8 rebounds for Argentina. With the result, Argentina lies in the 6th place while Jamaica is in the 7th place in the standings.

Uruguay 73 – 87 Mexico

After losing to Canada in the first match of the second round, Mexico defeated Uruguay 87 – 73 in their second match of the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.

Mexico took the first three quarters 18 – 11, 29 – 16 and 22 – 20 respectively while Uruguay took the last quarter 26 – 18. Gustavo Ayon scored 17 points, followed by Hector Hernandez, with 13 points for Mexico, while for Uruguay, the top scorer was Esteban Batista, with 25 points and 19 rebounds.

With the win, Mexico is now in the 4th spot while Uruguay lies at the last spot in the table.

Canada 59 – 64 Venezuela

Venezuela continued their winning streak in the second round of the championship. The hosts had beaten Uruguay in their first match of the second round, and now they beat Canada 64 – 59 in their second match of the second round of the championship.

The hosts took the first two quarters 16 – 14 and 19 – 12 while third quarter was a tie with both teams scoring 14 points each. Canada took the last quarter 19 – 15 but couldn’t stop the hosts to win the match.

Nestor Colmenares top scored with 13 points for Venezuela while Cory Joseph had 14 points, and Tristan Thompson had 12 points for Canada. Despite the loss, Canada is in second place in the table while hosts are in the fifth spot in the table.

Puerto Rico 84 – 99 Dominican Republic

Puerto Rico tasted their first defeat of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship in the hands of Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico 99 – 84 with 21 points from Jack Michael Martinez.

Puerto Rico took the first quarter 20 – 15 while Dominican Republic won the second quarter 21 – 20. After the break, Dominican Republic took the remaining two quarters 26 – 23 and 37 – 21 respectively to win the match and hand first defeat to the Puerto Rico in the championship.

With the win, Dominican Republic are now in third spot in standings with 8 points. Despite the loss Puerto Rico continued to lead the standings with 9 points.

10 teams affiliated to the FIBA Americas sub-zone are fighting for the continental honours at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, which are being held in Venezuela.

The top four teams qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. The final of the championship will be played on September 11, 2013.
