2013 FIBA Americas Championship: Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Argentina get tickets to 2014 FIBA World Cup

After securing the top four position respectively in the second round of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship and entering the semifinal of the championship; Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Argentina got their tickets to the 2014 Spain FIBA Basketball World Cup. They will be representing the FIBA Americas sub-zone in the 2014 Spain.

On the last day of the second round of the championship, Mexico beat Puerto Rico 66 – 59 to capture the first spot in the second round and enter the semifinal. Mexico took the first quarter 25 – 17 while Puerto Rico took the second quarter 18 – 12. But after the break, Mexico took the remaining two quarters 12 – 9 & 17 -15 respectively to win the match and grab the top spot to get their ticket to the 2014 Spain FIBA Basketball World Cup. In another match of the day, Dominican Republic beat Uruguay 86 - 78 to to win their ticket to the 2014 FIBA world cup by securing second spot in the second round of the championship. Although Uruguay won the first quarter 19 – 17, Dominican Republic took the remaining three quarters 22 – 21, 21 – 14, 26 – 24 respectively to enter the semifinals of the championship.

Argentina beat Canada 73 – 67 in another match of the last day of championship to book their spot in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. In a win or go home game for both teams, Luis Scola best performed with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Argentina to beat Canada 73 – 67 to help the South American nation to qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Canada took the first quarter 18 – 13 and Argentina took the second quarter 19 – 18. After the break, Argentina took the remaining two quarters 29 – 2 and 12 – 11 to book their semifinal spot in the championship.

In the last match of the second round of the championship, Venezuela beat Jamaica 95 – 85. Venezuela took the first quarter 19 – 10 while the Jamaicans took the second quarter 29 – 21. The hosts took the third and last quarter 21 – 20 and 34 – 26 respectively to win the match.

After the completion of the second round, here is how the standing looks like with top four teams entering the semifinals of the championship and grabbing their ticket to 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup which is going to be held in Spain, next year.

Mexico will play Argentina while Dominican Republic will face Puerto Rico in the semifinals of the championship.

FIBA Americas’ four (4) representatives (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Argentina) join Angola, Egypt and Senegal of FIBA Africa , Iran, Philippines , and Korea of FIBA Asia, Australia and New Zealand of FIBA Oceania and six (6) representatives from FIBA Europe, along with the four (4) “Wild Card” invitations in the 2014 Spain FIBA Basketball World Cup.

10 teams affiliated to the FIBA Americas sub-zone are fighting for the continental honours at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. The top four teams qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. The final of the championship will be played on September 11, 2013.
