If Wednesday saw a few close matches, Thursday seemed dedicated to one-sided affairs. The Chhattisgarh girls continue to march on in their quest to repeat last year’s Championship winning run.

They beat Delhi 91-49 in their last league match. Chhattisgarh girls, along with Kerala have won all their league matches and topped their respective groups (A & B).

Among the boys, Punjab added an exclamation mark to their dominance so far by beating Andhra Pradesh in their last league match by a margin of more than 40 points—this despite not playing international point guard Loveneet Singh, who was rested today.

With a 4-0 record, Punjab has topped Group B and will head into the quarterfinals with a lot of confidence. In Group A, Delhi has surprised many by winning all their league matches and topping their group.

Defending boys champion Chhattisgarh scraped into the quarterfinals by the skin of its teeth. Having won only one out of its first three matches, Chhattisgarh went into its final league match against Rajasthan desperate to win. They finally got their act together to take the game 110-86. The bottom placed Rajasthan will now be relegated to the lower pool next year.

Local teams suffer

Both the Odisha boys and girls teams lost their matches today. The girls’ team will be relegated to the lower pool next year after finishing at the bottom of their Group. They lost to Punjab 73-36.

Odisha boys lost to Haryana 93-72. Both Haryana and Odisha had already qualified for the pre-quarterfinals. The significance of this match is that the winner gets to pick its pre-quarterfinal opponent among the two fourth placed teams from the two upper groups. Odisha will now take on Maharashtra in the pre-quarterfinals tomorrow at 8:30 am.

Losers Knockout: Finalists Spotted

A separate series of matches is being held for all the lower pool teams that have already been eliminated from the main competition. This ensures that these teams get much needed match practice at the national level. Jharkhand and Bihar advanced to the loser knockout finals while in the girls section Andhra Pradesh and Assam will face off in the girls’ section.
