Bengaluru to host South Asian Basketball Championships

The qualifying tournament for the FIBA Asia Championships will be held in July

In some positive news coming in for Indian Basketball, the International Basketball Association(FIBA) has awarded Bengaluru with the rights to host the South Asian Basketball Championships- a qualifying event for the FIBA Asia Championships

Along with India, the qualifying tournament will also see the likes of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, take part and will be played at the Kanteerava Stadium between July 3rd and 5th.

Initially, Bangladesh were scheduled to host the tournament, but now the international body has asked the Basketball Federation of India(BFI) to conduct the tournament. Keeping in mind the little time they have at their disposal, the BFI have asked the probables to assemble for a selection trial on the 13th and 14th of June in Bengaluru.

Following the trials, 16 players will be selected and the selected ones will be part of a camp to prepare for the SABA Championships. The federation have also decided to go ahead with the original set of 25 probable players who were picked for the previous National Championships in Bhilwara, Rajasthan in January.

The last qualification tournament was held in Kathmandu in Nepal.
