Defending champs Tamil Nadu boys start off with victories, including in overtime against UP

Defending champs Tamil Nadu

After a rain interruption on the evening of Day 1 of the 32nd Youth National Basketball Championship, the matches resumed after cleaning and drying of the courts at around 7 p.m. and continued till late evening. The Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh boys Level 1 game was tantalisingly poised with Tamil Nadu leading by 1 point 49-48 in the third quarter. The game continued to be a close affair until the final minutes. Uttar Pradesh was led by their point guard Dhiraj, who enthralled the crowd with his ballhandling skills and crafty drives to the basket. For Tamil Nadu, 2014 Youth National Championship MVP P. Baladaneshwar led the way for his team. Despite trailing late in the game, Bala and his teammate Adarsh made clutch freethrows to help tie the game and take it into overtime. In the overtime period, Uttar Pradesh took an early 5-point lead, but then Baladaneshwar took over with tight defense on UP’s point guard and strong drives to the basket on offense. He ended up with 49 points in the game and Tamil Nadu clinched a 99-95 victory.

In the other Level 1 boys’ games in the evening, Haryana started off with a 69-65 victory against last year’s runners up Kerala in a tightly fought contest. The Punjab boys also registered a comfortable victory in their opening Level 1 Group B game against Rajasthan 47-8.

On the morning of Day 2, defending champs Tamil Nadu girls remained undefeated with a 56-18 victory against Madhya Pradesh led by Avanthi’s 22 points. Last year’s runners up Kerala girls suffered their second loss against last year’s third placed team Karnataka in a close game that ended at 42-37. Snigddha Nair top scored for her team with 17 points. Haryana girls impressed yet again with their second victory, this time against Delhi.

In the boys Level 1 games, Tamil Nadu remained strong with a 58-47 victory against Chhattisgarh on the basis of a balanced team effort. The Kerala boys bounced back with a 55-20 victory against Rajasthan, while Punjab continued their winning ways against Maharashtra.
