The draw for 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women was held last week at Turkey in the presence of representatives of the participating teams’ delegations – including head coaches and officials – as well as members of the Turkish and foreign media.

16 qualified teams from the FIBA continental zones were classified on the basis of playing quality, FIBA ranking, as well as geographical principles, with teams from the same continent being evenly distributed in four pots of four teams each.

This years’ championship will see a format change. The 16 participating teams are divided into four groups of four teams and will play each other in the respective group in a round-robin system. After all games are played, the top team of each group will advance to the quarterfinals, while the 2nd and 3rd best team of each group will play an elimination round. The last placed team of each group is eliminated. The winners of the elimination round will advance to the quarterfinals, while the losers are eliminated. Matches from the quarterfinals onward will be held on a knockout basis.
