FIBA Asia U16 Championship - 2nd round: India go down to Chinese Taipei

India went down to Chinese Taipei 80-69 in the second round of the third FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Men at Tehran, Iran.

In a close encounter, Chinese Taipei took the first quarter 27-17 to take a 10 point lead going to the 2nd quarter of the match. Chinese Taipei also took the second quarter 25-17 to be in the comfortable position at halftime.

After the break, India took the third quarter 18-15 and also took the last quarter 17-13. But the second half effort was too late for India to stop Chinese Taipei. Skipper Mahipal Singh netted a game high 34 points for India while Yen-Ju Wu was the top scorer for Chinese Taipei with 21 points.

In the other match on the first day of the second round, Iran beat Syria 61-46. It was Syria that took the first quarter 12 10. But Iran came out strong and took the remaining quarters 18-10, 20-12 and 13-12 respectively to ease past Syria. Khalel Khori netted 17 points for Syria while Amirhossein Azari netted 15 points for the winners.

India will face Kazakhstan next in the second round of the championship while Iran face Asian powerhouses China.

The top three teams from the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship will represent FIBA Asia in the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship to be played in Dubai (UAE) from August 7-17, 2014.

China won gold medals in the first two editions of the FIBA Asia U16 Championship.
