FIBA Asia U16 Women's Championship: India beat Malaysia to register first win

India defeated Malaysia 57-55 to register its first win in the Level 1 match of the ongoing 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Women at Colombo, Sri Lanka.

India took the first quarter 17-10 but lost the second and third quarters by 12-14 and 14-19 respectively. But the team came back in the last quarter and took it by 14-12 to win the match by a thrilling score of 57-55. For India, Bhandavya Hemmige scored 12 points, Riya Verma scored 11 points and Mayuka Kollam Thodi scored 10 points. For Malaysia, Ky Liew Hiew top scored with 12 points while Kar Syen Kho netted 11 points. India will next take on Chinese Taipei.

Meanwhile in the level 2 match, South East Asian team Indonesia defeated Central Asian team Kazakhstan 63-54 in OT thriller to top the Level 2 of the championship.

Level 1

  • Japan 75-59 China
  • Korea 89-67 Chinese Taipei
  • India 57-55 Malaysia

Level 2

  • HongKong 83-50 Jordan
  • Indonesia 63-54 Kazakhstan
  • Srilanka 51-82 Thailand

The 12 participating teams are divided into two Levels – the elite Level 1 and the qualifying Level 2. Each team will play all the other teams in their Level in the preliminary round. The top four teams from Level 1 will qualify for the semifinals.

The top three teams from the 3rd FIBA ASIA U16 Championship for Women will represent FIBA Asia in the 2014 FIBA World U17 Championship for Women which will be played at Bratislava (Slovak Republic) from July 10-July 20, 2014.
