Chauhan, Maan in Junior Asian Boxing meet semis

Indian colts made a resounding start to their campaign at the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships here in Kazakhstan.

Of the five junior Indian pugilists who took to the ring at the central stadium here Monday, four advanced to the next stage in their respective weight categories.

Reigning sub-junior national champion Aditya Maan (66kg) and silver medal winner at the 28th sub-junior nationals Prayag Chauhan defeated their respective opponents to march into the semifinals of the championship. The win now assures both the boxers of at least a bronze.

Maan and Chauhan displayed great skill and technique in the opening round to register a win by virtue of a unanimous decision on points. While Chauhan overpowered Nozimov Mumin of Tajikistan, Maan defeated Tsenquun Ganbold of Mongolia.

In the semifinals, Prayag is slated to take on Ernis Uulu Ruslan of Kyrgyzstan Wednesday while Chauhan will square off against Merjanov Eldar of Uzbekistan Thursday.

In other results, Pradeep (63kg) also assured himself of a bronze after securing a direct entry into the semis by virtue of a bye. The 16-year-old will now clash against the winner of the quarterfinal bout between Stolbovskiy Vladislav of Kazakhstan and Uzbek boxer Shodiljonov Sirojiddin.

In bantamweight, Thounaojam Bickychand also powered through to the Round of 8 with a unanimous victory by points over Duishobai Uulu of Kyrgyzstan. In the quarterfinals Wednesday he takes on Kholdarov Ikboijan of Uzbekistan.

In the pinweight division Mohammad Wasique beat Mongolian boxer Narantsogt to advance to the quarters. He will lock horns with Nursultan Bekbolat.

There was disappointment for India as L. Bhim Chand Singh lost to local lad Mazur Stoyan in the flyweight category. Deepak Kumar (52kg) and Vishnu Dayanand Chayal (57kg) will open their campaign Thursday in the quarterfinals after getting a bye in the pre-quarterfinals. Varinder Singh (48kg) is scheduled to play his pre-quarterfinal bout against Jiawei Ma of China Tuesday.
