Commonwealth Games 2014: Pinki Jangra and Sarita Devi assure India of two medals as they enter semifinals

India were assured of two medals after Pinki Jangra and L Sarita Devi entered the semifinals in their respective weight categories of the boxing competition at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Talented women’s pugilist Pinki Jangra stormed into the semifinals of the women’s flyweight category (48-51 kg). The Haryana girl, who got a bye to the quarterfinals, got the better of Papua New Guinea’s Jacquiline Wangi and next faces Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh on Thursday.

The world number 11 , who defeated the country’s lone Olympic medallist MC Mary Kom in the CWG selection trials, lived up to their billing against Wangi and will look to seal a final berth on Thursday. The other semifinal in the same weight category will pit England’s Nicola Adams against Canada’s Mandy Bujold.

Former world champion L Sarita Devi also sailed into the semifinals of the women’s lightweight (57-60 kg) category after beating Wales’ Charlene Jones. She will now play Maria Machongua of Mozambique on Thursday. The other semifinal in the same weight category will pit Australia’s Shelley Watts against Alanna Audley-Murphy of Northern Ireland.

Earlier in the day India’s Amritpreet Singh lost to Scotland’s Stephen Lavelle in the men’s heavyweight category (91kg).
